Have you ever been in a room where the paint color on the walls looked noticeably different as the day progressed?
Well that’s because, depending on the time of day, the angle and intensity of the sun shift can have a profound effect on how we perceive the objects and surfaces around us.
The affect natural light source has on how we see color is referred to as chromatic bias. For example, morning and evening have an orange bias, while midday light under a clear sky has a blue bias.
What we perceive as “colors” are really surfaces reflecting and absorbing various wavelengths of light. Over the course of a day, your brain spends a lot of time sorting through these light waves to accurately perceive color. The brain actually works the hardest, during transition periods when the timing of the light changes is the most rapid i.e. dawn and dusk.
Aside from the affects of sunlight, virtually everything in a room can influence color perception including furniture, upholstery, carpeting, draperies…you get the picture!
